Who is ...

The Mailman

The Mailman is one of Melbourne’s leading tipsters. You will go a long way to find a more successful and gregarious tipster.

“I’m not interested in making money for myself, I just want my loyal band of followers to be frequently flush with funds and enjoy fiscally fluent finances. Sorry, I can’t help speaking in headlines sometimes!”

And money they do make! Who will ever forget the Great Bookie Massacre of 2005? Starting with Benicio and a host of other winners on Derby Day, he backed up on Cup Day with seven more winners, including Hillfa at $18.40 and five more on Oaks Day.

And just when his fans had built up a substantial bank, he adjusted his “Gleeson”, loosened his top button and in his well worn brown pin stripe suit, he led the charge on the betting ring on Emirates Stakes Day.

The bookies saw them coming but it happened in slow motion. They were overwhelmed. Not even the most savvy bookie gave Valedictum a chance, hence the 33/1 that was widely available. Best fluc was not an item on a Chinese menu that day.

Tens of thousands, nay hundreds of thousands of dollars was wagered on Valedictum, most of it through the betting ring. Many bookies did not have time to lay off on the tote before they jumped. For most it was the race that ruined their Carnival. And the one that made the Mailman a marked man.

“It brought a tear to my eye. The stunned look on the faces of every bookie in the ring was music to my ears. Or eyes. You know what I mean. We struck one back for the little man that day”.

Since then houses have been renovated, school fees paid in advance and credit card accounts cleared thanks to the Mailman. You are sure to hear the immortal words "Ring a ding ding, the Mailman is the King!" many more times over the Spring Racing Carnival once again.

Of late, the Mailman has become somewhat of a conduit for all the unhappiness coming out of Racing Victoria and has taken it upon himself to expose the injustices he is seeing and hearing.
