14 November 2008 The Guru - Perth Metro Meeting Guineas Day at Ascot The $250,000 Group 2 W.A. Guineas (1600m) is race eight @ 4:55pm and has brought together a cracking field of this state's best three-year-olds. The expected favourite Grand Nirvana has faired poorly with the barrier draw marble falling at 15. The quality trio of fillies Vanetine Miss, Moccasin Bend and Locus Standi are all at the top of their game and are sure to make it difficult for the boys. There are also genuine winning chances to Swan Bee, Hermosa Corona and African Action in one of the best Guineas fields we have seen in recent years. Megatic won the Guineas in 2007 prior to taking the Group 1 Kingston Town crown and Summer Beau also achieved the feature Guineas/Kingston Town double in 1996. So treat the Guineas form seriously when preparing your Festival of Perth Racing form guide. There are three other stakes races to be contested including the $200,000 Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1200m), the $125,000 Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes (1500m) and the $75,000 Listed Jungle Mist Classic (1200m). Eastern state visitor's Pillar Of Hercules and Hips Don't Lie make their Western Australian debut's on the programme. That's not all, there is more! Two of the world's best sprinter's Takeover Target and Apache Cat will gallop between races four and five. Expected time for gallop 4:30pm EST. I can not remember a more high profile track gallop held on course during a race day. Ascot the Action Attraction in Perth this weekend! Race 1 @ 2:16pm (est) Solid speed and pressure expected. 6 works forward to lead from 3 and 5 close-up and 7 in box seat. Going with Yourcayeye each-way. Have really been taken by his trials and expect him to be charging late. Lead Rope is a deserved favourite and the horse to beat.
Back 8 each-way and quinella with 1
Race 2 –This should be a truly run staying race, which is rare here. 1 and 4 dispute lead at solid clip from 3 and 5 handy. Best bet of the day is Bold Scene. Genuine Perth Cup contender who should have finished closer fresh at 1600m last start, Was held-up behind a couple of slow one's when the leader and winner Rocky range kicked away. I expect Bold Scene to settle in the first five and show his superiority.
Load up 5 to win from 7,3,8,9,2 for multiple's
Race 3 – This will be truly run race, with 4 leading and rolling along, 1, 7 and 10 to settle handy. Very keen Zhamenka who is sensationally graded and the Pike engagement really suits. Non luck first-up in hot Northerly stakes and then not suited in Asian Beau last start. Drawn to get gun run and Pike's aggressive style will certainly wake him up. I think he is a great bet.
Bet-up 3 to win from 4,5,6,10 for multiple's
Race 4 – 5 will run them along in front, with 8 on top of speed in blinkers, 1 close-up and 4 and 7 handy. Yellow Moon has returned in great style subsequent to a throat operation. Hit the line better than anything last start behind handy Proart and will be suited with the expected strong tempo. Just needs an ounce of luck from an inside gate, but Jason Brown is the Ascot Ace, rides this track brilliantly.
Back 9 each-way from 4,2,1,7,5 multiples
Race 5 –(1st leg of quaddie) 9 leads 1 at a genuine clip, 12 pushes forward and 7 handy. Every horse gets their winning chance. Scratching's after weights have meant all the mares have been raised off the minimum and will have to carry 57 kilos. Magical Belle is an early scratching. Meaning Spirited One is the best weight horse, however the barrier draw hurts. Going with Galldora at good each-way odds. Overcame difficulties to win her maiden first-up last time in and then subsequently won her next start in town, that does not happen very often. Has a powerful finishing burst and watch her sprout wings late. Spirited One is the horse to beat and likely favourite.
4 is a good each-way gamble and save with a win bet on 10, add 1,2,7 in quaddie
Race 6–Final chance for horses to gain a start in potentially the best Railway we have ever witnessed. Good speed and pressure expected. 5 and 8 work forward to be prominent, with 9 and 10 handy. Gilded Venom is Perth's next big thing. Massive win in the Asian Beau when three wide no cover and raced away from Megatic. Further improved and definite horse to beat, however $2.60 is a very tight quote. At $3 bet-up. Pillar of Hercules has not raced since cox plate day and has winkers on. May just need this for the Railway next week. Massive in the Toorak and if he brings his A game can win. Famous Roman has vital addition of blinkers, smokey!
Back 4 if you get $3 small save at odds 6, add 3,10 for quaddie
Race 7 –Cracking sprint race! 1 and 11 set fast speed and watch the clock. 8 box seat. Keen Oroya Gold each-way. The key to this horse is high quality, fast run sprint races where he can settle back and rocket home. Big win last week and record on seven day back-up includes a Karrakatta Plate second. Should have nearly beaten Maraso at Belmont in June and if he gets an ounce of luck, he will be in the finish. Vain Raider broke his own 1100 metre record here last start and is the horse to catch. Hadabeclorka is ready to produce his best back from 1400 to 1200. Potting Danny Beau!
Back 10 each-way and the $5.5 currently bet on sportsbet 11 is juicy, he will be favourite tomorrow. Add 7 to quaddie.
Race 8 –(Last leg of quaddie) Great Guineas, with sensational depth. Expecting they will really pour it on in front here, with 2,3 and 8 working to lead spot, 15 and 16 handy. Grand Nirvana is Fred Kersley's next top liner. Love this horse and the $4.2 they are betting now on TAB Sportsbet is massive. He is a $2.5 chance. Blinkers go on this powerful son of Scenic to help him concentrate. Overcame difficulties to win a stakes race on debut and lumped 58 kilos to win the best guineas lead-up, the Fairetha. Wide draw suits, because he needs room and can sit three wide with cover, prior to going bang! Locus Standi is the best filly in the state and horse to get past.
1 is a special and bet now so you get the best odds. Include 15 in quaddie.13,14,5,10,4 for multiples
Race 9 @ 7:30pm (est) Speed everywhere! 5,6,13 most prominent, 7,9 and 10 handy. Like Blizzard Ridge who chased Vain Raider track record time first-up. Looked like he would drop out on corner, however dug deep to place. Good second-up record should be nice value in a very difficult race.
Small bet 5 and include 1,3,12,7,11,10,13 for wide multiple bet type's. I like Caymans in Sandown Guineas and tune in for the best Festival of Perth Racing ever all the way through to New Years Day. Good Luck and Happy Punting!
Full race replays from all country and provincial meetings are finally here! Tune in to all the racing action from the west with the PR.Com subscriber’s package for $200 a year, equating to $4 a week. This means every race in West Australia will be available for viewing on www.perthracing.com.au
31 October 2008 The Guru - Perth Metro Meeting
Festival of Perth Racing at Ascot It is a long weekend, double header at Perth Racing Headquarters, with the three feature races being held on Saturday, the $125,000 Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m), the Listed $75,000 Budget Rent A Car-Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) and the $75,000 Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m). Tuesday is Rosemount Melbourne Cup day at Ascot and apart from the race that stops a nation, there is a cracking nine race programme highlighted by the running of the $100,000 Listed RS Crawford Stakes (1000m). There’s only one place to be a part of all the action, and celebrate Australia’s Greatest Race.
Organise a picnic, a group of friends and head to Ascot trackside, the action attraction in Perth on Melbourne Cup Day.
Gate entry is $30 and Gates open from 8am.
The bookmakers and tote facilities are where the action is leading into the Melbourne Cup.
Melbourne Cup broadcasts live from Flemington on the big screens at 1pm.
Ascot is Perth Racing's Headquarters and becomes a festival of entertainment from the minute you enter the gates.
Party on the Flame Tree Lawn with Gravity keeping everyone entertained from 12-5pm.
In addition a DJ will be playing the hottest tracks from the Mounting Enclosure. The rail will stay at the three metre position for Saturday, back in from the nine metres mid week, the track is a good (2) and the early penetrometer is 5.7. Tuesday the rail will be placed back out to nine metres. Weather predicted for Saturday is a fine day, with a top of 27 degrees, while Tuesday is expected to be a very pleasant spring climate, a fine day and a top of 23 degrees. Highlights on Ascot's Long Weekend Programme of Racing: The $125,000 Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) was the launching pad for last years Festival of Perth Racing headline act El Presidente. Trainer Bruce Watkins mapped out the traditional program through the Asian Beau, RJ Peters and Railway Stakes, making the trio of Perth features his own. Megatic was the horse that was able to end the winning run of El Presidente last year in the Group 1 Kingston Town and is expected to start a red-hot favourite in the 2008 running of the Asian Beau. Albie Beckett has his stable star primed for another big run, after taking out the Listed Northerly Stakes a fortnight ago. Champion hoop Paul Harvey once again takes the ride and from a lovely barrier draw is sure to put himself at the top of Group 1 Carlton Draught Railway calculations post the Asian Beau on Saturday. Another promising four-year-old, Famous Roman has returned to competitive racing in fantastic fashion and following an eye-catching performance in the Northerly, is expected to prove the hardest for Megatic stave off at the finish. Consistent performers Beat The Storm, Danecay, Gilded Venom, Hadbeclorka, Hartleys Dream, Idyllic Prince and Tarzi will all contribute in making this one of the best Asian Beau's on record. The $75,000 Listed Budget Rent A Car-Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) sees the states best sprinting fillies facing off in an intriguing event. Recent Belgravia Stakes victor Moccasin Bend looks a genuine WA Guineas contender and will be a deserved favourite this Saturday to make it back to back Ascot features. Valentine Miss doesn't know how to run a bad race, while well bred maiden filly Most Secretive appears suited from an inside draw up to 1400 metres. The $75,000 Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) is the boys division of the three-year-old stakes racing this weekend at Ascot and has magnificent depth. One of the best young prospects in Western Australia is the well related colt Grand Nirvana, who ran a barnstorming second in the Belgravia Stakes first-up two weeks ago. The powerful son of Scenic put the writing on the wall winning at Listed level in the autumn as a juvenile, prior to narrowly missing the major prize in the Group 2 Karrakatta Stakes, behind two-year-old of the year Brava Fortune. Grand Nirvana remains at the top of all calculations for WA Guineas discussions and can enhance his already hefty reputation in the Fairetha. Winning form is good form and that is what bold front runner Hawkeye Mort takes into the race. Hawkeye Mort has been taken along nicely by astute hobby trainer Arthur Mortimer, securing three metropolitan victories on end. Once again he will start over the odds and take plenty of catching. Russell Road, Swan Bee, Jay Jay Makster and Emteevee all ran forward races in the Belgravia last time, and cant be shelved. The Belgravia form was franked midweek at Ascot when African Action and Dash Of Brains ran one-two in the three-year-old race. The second leg of the Ascot double header weekend of racing will be pumping, with an enormous atmosphere. The big attraction will be the mouth watering clash between local flying machines Dark Target and Vizard in the $100,000 Listed RS Crawford Stakes (1000m). Dark Target has smashed the clock at his two successes since returning from a short winter let-up, while Vizard has not been seen since taking the scalp of Dark Target in the Belmont Newmarket in August. On that occasion Dark Target was in receipt of 4.5 kilograms from Vizard, however the heavy track seemed to take the edge off Dark Target. Ascot is expected to be ideal surface for racing and should go a long way to showing who will take the mantle as the state's premier sprinter. Ascot the Action Attraction in Perth this double header weekend! Race 1 @ 2:04pm (est) Ascot is starting to heat up with a cracking programme of racing ahead of us this afternoon. Very keen we can begin on a winning note here, with the very promising Colour Correct. Ran into more backsides than Elton John when resuming and should of won clearly. The speed will be on with Naval Seal and Legend Express duelling for the front which will suit Colour Correct down to the ground. Expect him to go back from wide draw, circle field and be a touch too good.
Build the bank with 6, it's a special, 5 value for quinella spot
Race 2 –This could be tricky with the lack of speed on paper, however Reverend Lovejoy looks a safe bet for mine. Has been in terrific form since joining Adam Durrant and he was the best of the on pacers in the strong Northam Cup last week behind Capuchin. Drawn to be ridden positively by young gun Noske and his record on the quick back-up is impeccable. He was able to win twice in a week at Belmont in Sept/Oct.
Back 1 and include 4 for quinella, 7,5,6 for trifecta's
Race 3 – Watch the clock here. It is not often you look at the distance of the race, below is the track record and the holder is running. It is Vain Raider who ran 1.02.98 here last season. Blinkers come off after he was a touch tardy to begin when resuming, then failed to handle the home corner. He did a very good job to get so close to the in form Escadaire and that form measures up well. I have no doubt he will lead here, run time and win. Will be short but should really win.
Load up 1, there really looks no dangers if the Vain raider from first-up turns up
Race 4 – This is why the Perth Cup distance has been changed, this race is just horrible. I only think two horses can win this Pencaza and Zuboyne. Back one and save the other.
Back 1 & 10 to make a profit, from 2,3,4
Race 5 – Really good mares race, with various form lines to match up. If Jarrad Noske just allows Black In Time to drift back, circle the field from the 500 metres she will sprint over the top of these. There is plenty of speed to allow her to run on, with the Chatfield ridden Princess O'Lara. Watch for big fresh runs from Lacida and French Favourite. Both these mares excel fresh and look the best value. Icy Maiden should have won in mid week grade last start and will be competitive.
Back 1 if can $3 or better, value in race will be 10,4,9
Race 6–(1st leg of quaddie) I can not see how the girls can beat Moccasin Bend, one of our old favourites. The best boys in Perth could not beat her in the Belgravia two weeks ago and subsequently Hermosa Corona and African Action have come out of that race and won. Genuine speed will allow Jason Whiting to slot in to a nice spot midfield and he electric turn of foot should prove the winning tonic.
Back 2 confidently, 5,9,1 will be thereabouts from 3
Race 7 –Grand Nirvana is a Group 1 winner in the making and will keep the Scenic blood pumping in this country for the years to come. Should have beaten Moccasin Bend first-up in Belgravia, if had not got in a bumping duel turning for home with Hermosa Corona. On track for WA Guineas and open age Kingston Town, and I think he is the right horse to do it. Drawn to get a charmed run off a genuine speed and should win. Jay Jay Makster will be the overs in the race. Probably should of placed in the Belgravia and gets a cheap run here.
Keen 1 from 7 the value, then 8,3,2,13
Race 8 –The feature event for the afternoon and a great guide to the Railway. Hard to see Megatic's Northerly Stakes rivals turning the tables on him here. I have Megatic sitting one out, three back, with the gun run in transit. If you take out his Sydney runs when he was not right, his record reads 9 starts 6 wins 2 seconds and Group 1 WFA win last year in the Kingston Town as a three-year-old. He is very good! Beat The Storm did it tough outside the lead in the Northerly and I see him getting a softer run here. He presents value, while Famous Roman was the unlucky runner in that race and will be charging late, he is Railway material.
Like 1 but may be under odds, $2.8 is around his right quote, 2 will be each-way odds and Famous Roman will need luck but can win. This trio stand out to me. From 7,6,12,13 for multiples.
Race 9 @ 7:42pm (est) No clear cut leader here. I think Rocky Range will work across from a wide gate, Bold Scene may race a touch fresh and be there, while Arctic Waters will be prominent. I Think this trio will dominate the race. Bold Scene is the best of the locals for the Perth Cup on New Years Day. Very classy staying type that just went bang at Belmont through the winter. In work a while and ready for the mile first-up. Arctic Waters was impressive blowing away mid week grade last start and is on the up. While Rocky Range is not far away from a win at his fourth run for Alan Mathews.
1,6,7 in quaddie. Back 1 because bookies will risk him and he is a promising horse in good hands. 7 will be favourite and the horse to beat, while Rocky Range moral to run a hole.
I Like Bernicia each-way in Myer and Hot Danish in Salinger. In the Melbourne Cup keen Profound Beauty each-way, from Mad Rush, with place hope Zarita and Nom De Jeu
Good Luck and Happy Punting!
Full race replays from all country and provincial meetings are finally here! Tune in to all the racing action from the west with the PR.Com subscriber’s package for $200 a year, equating to $4 a wekk.
This means every race in West Australia will be available for viewing on www.perthracing.com.au
25 October 2008 The Guru - Perth Metro Meeting
Community Newspaper Family Race Day at Ascot
It was a record breaking return to racing at Ascot last Saturday, with over 12,000 racing fans on course to enjoy the fantastic action on and off the track. Community Newspaper family race day will be highlighted by the running of the feature event, the Group 3 $125,000 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m). The rail will be placed in the three metre position, back in from the 15 metres mid week, it was true last Saturday, the track is a good (3) and the early penetrometer is 6.2. There has been plenty of rain Thursday night and Friday, but this is a brilliant drying track. Weather predicted for Saturday is a clearing day, with a top of 21 degrees. Highlights on Ascot's Prince Of Wales programme: The weight for age Prince Of Wales Stakes is a strong form guide for the imminent carnival sprints with the honour roll including star studded names such as Miss Andretti, Willoughby, Jacks Or Better, M'Lady's Jewel and many promising horses putting the writing on the wall by filling a place. Brilliant sprinter Dark Target made everyone stand up and take notice, blowing away his rivals first-up at the final Belmont meeting. The Danetime four-year-old looks to have returned from a short break in tip top order and is set to improve on an already imposing record this weekend from the prized rails draw. Dark Target has won seven of his 15 starts, amassing stake earning's nearing $300,000 and is currently the highest ever westspeed bonus scheme earner. A serious challenge is excepted to be provided by reigning Prince Of Wales Stakes victor Idyllic Prince, who is always difficult to beat under weight for age conditions. Winning Belmont winter galloper Elliotto returns to Ascot and makes the leap into stakes company for the first time, while excellent fresh performers Far Horizons, Oroya Gold and Royal Lott will be charging home at the business end of proceedings. The $60,000 Community Newspaper-Country Cup (1500m) has brought together an in form group of country stars. Interange has won three of his last four starts, including the Toodyay Cup and heads the weights. Paul Jordan will saddle up two members of his in form stable in Henry The Pharoah and Clarecastle. Promising David Harrison trained galloper Goldy Junior is on the up and is expected to be the punters elect. The babies will step out for the second time this season, in the $50,000 Waneroo Times 2YO Plate (1100m) and 'Gelorup Genius' Peter Giadresco will make the trip from Bunbury with two born runners Gold Rocks and Bronze Bullet. Gold Rocks made the opening two-year-old race her own at the final Belmont programme, while debutante Bronze Bullet has been burning up the trial track in recent weeks. Other horses to keep safe from the trials will be Initial Outcome and Happy Angel, both impressive heat winners from last Monday's Belmont trials. Ascot the Action Attraction in Perth this Weekend! Race 1 @ 2:46pm (est) My clear top pick Bronze Bullet has been scratched to allow his stable mate Gold Rocks to continue on her winning way. Gold Rocks was brilliant winning her debut at Belmont, but I can tell you that Bronze Bullet has been burning up the track in trials and track work. We will keep Bronze Bullet in our black books for next start. Meanwhile Gold Rocks should cross lead and win at very cramped odds. Happy Angel and Initial Outcome have shown ability at the trials and can be competitive for prize money.
1 wins but will be skinny, 7 and 8 the next best for betting value
Race 2 –Tactic's vital again, as all staying races in this state are. They won't make this a true staying test, but I think there will be enough tempo to give every horse their chance. Best two hopes are at the head of the weights. Kia Ora Miss is game as they come. She was able to pick up and sprint sharply to score last week off a slow speed. From a nice draw with Jarrad Noske up she will be the one they all have to beat. However I believe if there is just an inkling of speed in this race Windfields Farm can storm home over the top of his rivals. Was given no hope settling last off a dawdling tempo last week behind Kia Ora Miss, however loved the way he attacked the line. Handy riding change and 1.5 kilogram turnaround will make the difference.
Back 2 and quinella with 1 from 5,6,7
Race 3 – Not much depth in this race and the tempo will only be steady. Keen Top two again. Hermosa Corona was in a battle royal turning for home last week with the eventual Belgravia runner-up Grand Nirvana and forget he went around, he definitely came off second best. Previous form tip top and was able to be stakes placed at Ascot as a juvenile behind a horse I rate very highly Grand Nirvana. Gets a lovely run behind speed and looks hard to toss. Valentine Miss is brave but not big so 58kg may test. One thing can be guaranteed she will not give up.
Back 2 and quinella with 1 from 3,7,4
Race 4 – This is a cracking race and the pressure will be right on throughout here. I think I have found a nice horse here in The Unforgiven. From the astute yard of gun first-up trainer George Daly. Two trials have been enormous. First trial settled six lengths off the second last horse and rattled home to go down a closing second. Then began quickly in second trial, could have led and then cruised to lead, however just wanted to pull up and gawk a little. No blinkers were worn in either trial and they go on here. Drawn to box seat behind Revolition and will get his chance. I know this is a high standard Saturday race, which is very difficult to succeed in on debut, but I think he may be smart. I reckon we will get on.
Back 9 each-way if that way inclined from 1,4,2,7
Race 5 – This is a Country Cup which Interange will high ball in front for Chloe Chatfield. Like Clarecastle here. She is tough as old boots. Paul Jordan has done a marvellous job to get this mare back from serious injury issues. This time in has taken the scalp of Urlay Nook, since remained unbeaten including a city win, then out sprinted by sharp Magical Belle, then chased a frenetic speed set by Tepanyaki and had every right to fall over late. Follows leader again and will pull out all stops to win. Goldy Junior only other hope.
Back 3 and quinella with 7 from 5,8,4,1
Race 6–(1st leg of quaddie) Tricky little race with leader Miss Kama likely to do her own thing in front, but she is susceptible to being run over if there is any sort of pressure applied, especially in this higher grade. I believe Kereign is the best horse that will come out of this race. Resumes here and loved the way he had thickened up since a winter break, when I saw him at the trials. Had a soft trial and I believe connections will need to be winning these races to get his rating up so he can compete in the better races later in the carnival. Drawn wide but will go back and come with a rush. Took the scalp of top off season three-year-old Cohort last time in and looks the real deal to me. Secret Enigma and Estiarte there is not much between and are the dangers.
Back 7 and couple up with 4,5,9 in quaddie
Race 7 –Comic Hero will lead at his favourite journey around his ideal track. He is at his best when leading, rolling and doing as he pleases. Expect he will get an opportunity to do that here. I loved his win three starts back, leading throughout and then not suited back to 1200m, when run off his feet at next start. Too slick again last time and the one they all have to run down once again. The short priced favourite will be one of my favourites Magic Belle, but whether she can chase down a free rolling Comic Hero, I don’t know. I can line these horses up by their respective wins on September 6 at Belmont over 1400m, Comic Hero led, pressured and fought on to run a sharp 1.23:97, while Magical Belle did a good job to sit off a slow speed and sprint home, overall time 1.24:36. Magical Bell will be $2.5, while Comic Hero will be $5+.
Going to back 6 and couple up in multiples with 5,4,8 take them all in quaddie
Race 8 –Feature for the afternoon and this has been a good horse's race for many years. Miss Andretti was the victor in 2005, before embarking on the world. The quinella horses from last year will line-up in Idyllic Prince and Grasspatch Girl. Dark Target was awesome first-up in 56.75 for 1000 metres, the last 600 metres in 31.93. He is eastern states standard for the Lightning etc in the autumn. Tricky draw, because he can miss the kick, but the wizard Pike knows what he has underneath him and will ride him like the best horse. There really is no betting value because we are looking at red figures. The best suited horse under weight for age is Idyllic Prince with his 101 rating, he should be giving Dark Target over 4 kilograms, but they sit on equal weights. He will be flashing home and is the only danger.
Take 1 and 4 in quaddie and thread them through multiples from 3,9,8,6
Race 9 @ 8:15pm (est) Really strong speed expected here and survival of the fittest. Love the former Victorian Gondorff. Trialled nice at Belmont for a middle distance horse, then ridden on the speed in a 1200m first-up and got tired late. Down in class, up to 57.5 kilos and was dominant beating an ordinary bunch at Northam. Drawn perfect, on minimum weight with Pike on board and being a son of Montjeu, up to 1800 metres with some rain around, he JUST WINS! Think he has a bright staying future in this state. Lambton Castle will appreciate up to 1800m and runs second.
Skinny in quaddie 8 & 2 and load up your bets on 8 from 2 then 7,11,1,2,10
I like Pillar Of Hercules in Jayco Mile at Moonee Valley
Good Luck and Happy Punting! Full race replays from all country and provincial meetings are finally here! Belmont Saves Best Until Last
Belmont, the winter racing headquarters closes its doors after this Saturday's race meeting, and it will be an extremely entertaining afternoon, highlighted by the Saddleworld Apprentices' Challenge.
The rail moves to the six metre position for Saturday, the same as midweek at Belmont, it was true last Saturday, the track is a good (3) and the early penetrometer is 5.9.
Weather predicted for Saturday is a fine day, with a top of 20 degrees.
Highlights on the Saddleworld Apprentices' Challenge programme: It is a wonderful initiative by RWWA to give an opportunity to Australia's most gifted apprentices to face off in a state of origin battle on our home soil.
Our best local talent selected to represent Western Australia include Shane Gilchrist, Andrew Mallyon, Taz Salleh, Chloe Chatfield, Jarrad Noske, Ben So, Simon Miller and Simone Altieri.
They will attempt to repel a challenge from a visiting band of apprentices' made up of Harry Hillier (Vic), Michael Palmer (QLD), Jason Maskiell (TAS), Luke Cumberland (NSW), Scott Bailey (SA) and Glen Davis (NT).
The $60,000 Saddleword-Apprentices' Challenge (1400m) has an excellent field assembled, with last start Belmont winner Shipyard heading the weights. Highly promising Adam Durrant trained five-year-old Inarticulate is expected to prove hard to toss.
Inarticulate was dynamite going through his grades last time in, after prevailing first-up at Bunbury in late March, he moved on to win four consecutive races, ending with a dominant Ascot success in May.
Our earliest babies are up and going with the first two-year-old race of 08/09, in the $50,000 Westspeed 2YO Plate (1000m).
The trio to watch from the trials are the Neville Parnham trained Zedrich colt Converted, the beautifully bred Testa Rossa colt Test The Angels and the speedy Peter Giadresco trained filly Gold Rocks.
All impressed in recent Belmont educational work out's and are expected to prove the testing material.
There is a tremendous support card headed by classy sprinters Dark Target and Hadabeclorka eyeing a return in the $50,000 Open Sprint (1000m).
They will need to be on top of their game, as brilliant sprinter Universal Ruler is likely to back up from a heavy defeat last Saturday in the Birthday Stakes.
The $50,000 Fillies and Mares Sprint (1200m) has brought together a small but select field, with flying lass's Miss Kama and Brooklyn's Rose likely to face a strong challenge from gifted mare's Sleepwalk and Black In Time.
Experience Belmont for the last time in 2008!
Race 1 @ 2:46pm (est) The first two-year-old race of the season in W.A. Can't wait! Love my juvenile racing when you see all the horses trial publicly. We can have two bets here and come out with a profit. Test The Angels is a $90k purchase from Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. This lovely colt is by Testa Rossa out of former classy Jim Conlan trained lass Angel's Image, who was placed in a Blue Diamond Prelude behind Merlene. I was at Belmont trials on Monday after watching four weeks of public trials here in the west and was taken by the way Test The Angels covered his rivals so easily over 1000 metres. Converted is a well put together Zedrich home bred from a winning family and judging on his 600 metre trial at Belmont on September 22, he will do everything right. Expect him to be up outside Gold Rocks and hard to run down.
Back 6 and save 1, fromn 8, then 7,3
Race 2 –This is the field that contains two potential Autumn classic horses. Cassandara Shadow was set too bigger task last time, 58 kilos, ridden to patient and having to give away 5 kilos to Hawkeye Mort. There was only a nose the difference and weights are equal now. Ben So? Hong Kong 21 year old apprentice that has done the hard yards on country tracks and deserves his crack. Really I don't know how he will deal with this scenario. Remilio is an untapped son of Redoute's Choice that has done everything that can be done wrong in his starts to date. Ran his race in patches last time and the blinkers go on for the first time up to 1600m. He will put in the type of run that everyone will make him their black booker of the future.
Back 1 and save 5 from 2,4,7,3
Race 3 – Only five runners with scratching of 6-Unrivalled. Brooklyn's Rose leads Miss Kama, with Black In Time in the box seat. Brooklyn's Rose tends to roll out under pressure and has left hand whip apprentice on board. So expecting Black In time to zip up the rails with electric turn of foot and win. Reports are Sleepwalk working as well as ever and Brooklyn'sn Rose considered highly
Back 3 with confidence, from 2,1,4
Race 4 – Valentine Miss has a real will to win, however is hard to steer around the home corner, so once again Ben So's ability will be challenged. Attacked the line to run down subsequent impressive Belmont victor Revolition last start and hard to go past for mine. Pure Fire the one to beat, however a little query on the 1200m. Has showing real fighting qualities.
Back 1 to beat 2 from 6,3
Race 5 – This is the Apprentices Challenge and expecting the Victorian Harry Hillier to do the Big V proud. Hillier can get a soft lead on Shipyard and dictate terms to suit himself. Found winning form last time and can now go on with it.
Keen 1 from 6, then 3,4
Race 6–(1st leg of quaddie) Dante's Banquet one of our favourites leads here and make this race his own. A front running stayer is worth it's weight in gold in this state. Dante's Banquet has won his last three starts in dashing style and appears well weighted here with claim. I have the feeling he can make a splash this summer in the feature staying races at Ascot.
Back 3 with confidence from 7 then 2,9,4,6,5
Race 7 –Genuine speed in this race means all competitor's will get their chance to win. My horse Diego De La Vega is a horse that is still a sculpture being created. Adam Durrant is building a high class stayer . The former Kiwi has had two runs back from a spell over unsuitable distances and is primed third-up to 1600m. He is still a lad race day and can play up in gates, but race track ability is untapped. Fire Of Denmark is another lightly raced galloper with untapped potential and has winning claims. Debut was excellent in a strong maiden and then just took care of an ordinary lot easily in town last time.
Just take 6 and 11 in quaddie then multiples 1,2,4,7,10
Race 8 –Hardest race of the day, but that means value. Really keen about the chances of Awesome Force. This lightly raced son of Viscount was dominant at Northam two starts back, before a little niggle forced him to not race for five weeks. Raced out of his class and did a bit wrong, before rushing to the line under no pressure. This is the right race and we will get good betting value.
Back 13 each-way with confidence from 3,6,1,7,12,16
Race 9 @ 7:52pm (est) They will smash the clock in the final race of the Belmont season. What a cracking 1000m dash we are set for. Class runners Dark Target and Universal Ruler will get the punters attention but there may be sneaky here. On form and stats it is Dark Target Dist: 7:5-1-1 Track: 5-3-1-1 Track/Dist: 4:3-1-0 and 1st-Up 3:3-0-0 Resumes from a spell and on this firm track watch him fly! Three Amigos is the value. Former J McCardle trained Victorian that has blossomed since being transferred West and gelded. The Gangemi family have done a wonderful job using this Three Amigos natural speed to advantage. Made locals stand up and take notice last season at Ascot winning two 1000m races with pure speed. Can cross from nine and lead or sit on speed. Trial at Belmont on 22/9 was something to see, burnt to front and careered away to win effortlessly in sub 60 seconds, flying. Chopin last Saturday's final race 1000m winner was left in its wake. It is the value
Back 3 and 11 from 2 if they go too hard will be flashing and then 1? Saddle slipped 10 last week.
I like Alamosa in Toorak each-way all day.
Good Luck and Happy Punting!

4 October 2008 The Guru - Perth Metro Meeting
Birthday Stakes Belmont Feature
Belmont the winter racing headquarters, heads into its final month of racing in October, with all guns blazing, as many of this states most high profiled gallopers begin their Festival of Perth Racing preparations.
The rail is at the inside position for Saturday, it was nine metres last Saturday and the Thursday York @ Belmont meeting was run on the inside ground, the early penetrometer is 6.1
Weather predicted for Saturday is a clearing day, with a top of 20 degrees. Highlights on the Birthday Stakes programme;
Spring is certainly upon us as field sizes grow in not only quantity, but also quality.
The race we are all waiting for with much anticipation is the $75,000 Listed Birthday Stakes (1200m), where we see the return of Festival of Perth Racing aspirant's Megatic, Grasspatch Girl, Universal Ruler, Hartleys Dream, Noble Steed, Fim Maru, Classy Nugget and more.
Last years Healthway Go for 2 & 5 champion three-year-old Megatic will be seen, for the first time since back soreness put paid to any realistic winning opportunity during a Doncaster preparation.
Megatic heads the weights against a cracking field of sprinters including brilliant galloper Universal Ruler, who also makes his first appearance since a failed road trip. Universal Ruler made the journey to Singapore in May to take on some of the worlds fastest horses in the Kris Flyer at Kranji racecourse.
Following a horror barrier draw result, Universal Ruler had absolutely no luck, covering loads of extra ground and unable to make an impact.
Trainer Darren McAuliffe has plans in place for his stable star to be primed for the Railway/Kingston Town feature double during the Festival of Perth Racing. It will be a spirited betting dual between the mentioned runners and the race fit Classy Nugget.
Classy Nugget only broke his maiden status in March this year at Bunbury, prior to winning seven of his next 13 starts, graduating to stakes company with a dazzling display in the Farnley Stakes at the end of August.
There are several other reasons to make a day of it at Belmont this weekend, seeing that many of our former top shelf two-year-olds return to make their presence felt through the spring/summer.
Outstanding stallion prospect Grand Nirvana returns, along with stable mate pocket dynamo Danerip.
The Fred Kersley trained pair will be joined by untapped natural talent Zeda Mak, who always showed whatever he did as a baby, he would return a much stronger conveyance in his three-year-old season.
These well credentialed youngsters will not have it all their own way, in the company of a race hardened group including Pure Fire, Revolition, Valentine Miss and Prince Of Silk.
Races will commence at 1:44pm (EST) and the last race at 7:05pm (EST).
Race 1 @ 1:44pm (est) Small field of the b grade three-year-olds stepping up to 1400 metres. Even/steady tempo expected, with very little pressure. Valentine Miss likely leader. Not a race I will be investing heavily in. I think Saxon Palace and Flying Angel have the most scope. Saxon Palace is a Umatilla half brother to the flying Jestatune who resumed with a fast finishing third to Pure Fire over 1000 metres and will definitely appreciate the step up to 1400 metres. Flying Angel was dominant scoring over 1200 metres in mid week grade on debut and is a beautifully bred filly who will train on. Valentine Miss is small but honest.
I will not be betting, but going 2 7 3 from 1
Race 2 –This will be a genuine run affair with Mr President and Dane Crusher setting up the tempo. I like Kenbon who was not suited drawing near the rails last start. Raced ungenerously inside horses and then had no room at a vital stage. He is best when brought to the outside to come with one run. Amici is back from a goldfields failure and is under the care of the Gelorup genius Peter Giadresco, while Capuchin was luckless first-up.
Like 6 from 2,1 then 4,3
Race 3 – This is not a strong race that will be run at a genuine tempo. Black Douglas and King Kool Kat make the speed. Like Midtime who has been freshened up since running some honest races over 2000m+. I personally think he is a better miler, that needs to be wound up early in his races from back in the field, ready to pounce on the corner. Was beaten 3.5 lengths at weight for age in last years Group 1 Kingston Town and was not far away from El Presidente and Glory Hunter this time last year.
3 each-way all day from 5,4,6
Race 4 – Tricky race with very little pressure expected. Jungle Hawk looks the leader from Estiarte. Going with Estiarte, the race fitness on his side, a cosy barrier draw and likelihood of the pie run on the speed. Very good winning good form race three starts back, then no luck last two. Should have won clearly last time. Well placed. Gallivanter very good horse resuming with blinkers on, and horse capable of blowing this field to smitherines.
Back 6 and save 1 from 7,8,2,4
Race 5 –Genuine tempo expected with even pressure. Former Victorian trained mare Icy Maiden will wear the contract racing colours and go very close. Was given an easy kill at Narrogin first-up and it was a solid provincial class field. After sitting in the box seat her turn of foot was electric inside the 250 metre point. Has always shown promise, including a metro class Seymour placing behind Arcadia, before not appearing settled in at her first two runs earlier in the year in Perth. We will see the best of her now. From a good draw with Pike should win and win well. Miss Appropriate will be the horse to run down. She is very genuine and digs deep.
7 should win from 1 then 5,6,2,11
Race 6– (first leg of quaddie) Hot three-year-old race and a very good guide to the up coming stakes races. Pocket dynamo Danerip is only small, however what she lacks in size she makes up with a real will to compete. From barrier one she will box seat and show a devastating turn of foot to take care of this lot. She is a push button horse than can go from travelling to top gear very quickly. No trial, but it is only a 1000 metres and Fred Kersley is a great conditioner. Wins!
4 a special, from 1,10,2,3
Race 7 –Not a lot of tempo expected here and no pressure. This gives Nalbandian a soft lead and therefore a great winning opportunity. Nalbandian is a big strong son of Palace Reign who was a late starter to racing, through injury and maturity. What he has done so far has been in one preparation. Very good maiden win and the second horse has since won in Belmont Saturday grade. Last start three wide no cover and run down late by a smart horse that got the cheap rails run. Nice weight drop and Harvey rides. Lambton Castle is the best horse, but has a tricky draw, big weight and will get back. He is the only danger.
10 and save 1 from 2 then 8 big for multiples
Race 8-Hot sprint field lining up here and tricky with the class horses first-up and short of peak condition. I think Solidwickedcruel could be the overs at around $12-14 each-way fixed odds. Big run first-up in the Ruabon, when worked to lead at good speed and nailed late by a swooper. Gets the lead at own terms and will give a bold sight. He looks the best he has looked this time in and the Second Empire progeny get better with age and maturity. Megatic and Universal Ruler are the class horses. Megatic is already a group 1 winner and Universal Ruler is untapped. Megatic worked enormous Tuesday morning with stable mate but has to overcome a wide gate with top weight, no trial and Universal Ruler trialled strongly on Monday Lark Hill. He will get the charmed 1 x 1 run in fourth spot. & |
